Oh, you are going to love this! One of my favorite comedy houses has gone up town! (er.. mid-town)
On Friday, November 6, the Sacramento Comedy Spot premiered its new location in the MARRS building right in the middle of Sacramento’s arts & entertainment scene. This new theater, located on 20th Street between J and K, is considerably larger than the Comedy Spot’s previous venue on Broadway and will host live alternative comedy events Thursday through Sunday.
Shows feature the improv troupe, Anti-Cooperation League, the Sacramento Comedy Spot’s longest running improv show in which audience members are brought on stage and interviewed while cast members search through their wallet or purse to find bits of scene-inspiring information.
Sacramento Comedy Spot’s brand of improv bears very little resemblance to the parlor game variety popularized by the television franchise Whose Line is it Anyway? The Comedy Spot flavor is more like what one would experience at alternative comedy theaters in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, such as Upright Citizens Brigade and iO (formerly known as Improv Olympics).
The Comedy Spot also produces unique stand-up comedy shows like Comedy from the Couch and late-night comedy shows like Dare or DARE, which is part game show and part “Truth or Dare” but without the boring Truth part. Ticket prices are generally less than the price of a movie and there is no two-drink minimum.
The Sacramento Comedy Spot also offers an expanded list of classes with multiple levels of improv, stand-up, and sketch comedy. It will also be offering kids’ comedy classes in January.
The Sacramento Comedy Spot is owned by Ron Dumonchelle and Brian Crall. Brian Crall is a cast member, an improv instructor, and he produces most of the shows at the Comedy Spot himself. He has trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater in Los Angeles, which has produced many well-known comedians working in television and movies today.
Sacramento, if you haven’t experienced eclectic mix of comedy, improv, music and long form sketch comedy, you MUST attend these shows!
