style="font-size: medium;">Headlines August 11 – 15

Ty realized for the first time that being black was going to be an issue when the doctor slapped him…twice… and made him cut his own umbilical cord!

With his ability to put a funny and unique spin on topics such as race: ” We should switch stereotypes…every 30 days”, religion: “my grandma is the only person I know with a tattoo of the Last Supper” and politics: ” I’m glad gas prices are high… drive-by shootings have decreased!!” Ty demonstrates that comedy can be funny and yet thought provoking.

He has been performing since his high school days on Chicago’s south side. His ability to make people of all cultures laugh was necessary in a school full of diversity.

He began touring California, Oregon, and Canada, gaining respect and a reputation as “someone to watch”; “a tremendous performer”; “refreshing”. He was voted Up-and-Coming Comedian of the Year in 2002 at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival and named “outstanding performer” at Montreal’s “Just for Laughs” festival, where he first got the attention of the Hollywood Industry.

Today, after numerous appearances on TV commercials and live shows such as ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, he is a regular on CBS Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Ty has been performing with some of the best talents in the entertainment industry such as Al Green, Chris Rock, Robert Schimmel.

The media particularly acclaimed his performance at the Universal Amphitheater where Ty opened up the show for Donna Summer in front an audience of 6000 people.

Ty’s comedy has been very well received also by college audiences and he is now one of the most requested comedians in colleges across the country. Phil Iaezetta defines him “Fucking hilarious” and he is now one of the most requested comedians on Sirius Radio. He has been featured in the Hollywood Reporter as well as Maxim Magazine to name a few.

Ty’s comedy is hysterically funny, smart, and edgy. With his unique charm and hypnotic presence Ty delivers in every show laughs with a message. And this is what makes him a rarity among today’s comedians: he makes audiences think. Beside his undeniable likeability audiences love Ty because he has something to say.

He is the voice of this generation yet he reminds audiences of the classic art of performing. He is a true comedian much like his predecessors: Pryor, Cosby, Carlin, Bruce, Ajaye, Hicks.

Watch and listen to him and you will find out why laughter is universal.

<a

With their quick wits and fierce left handed compliments, these two can be seen on TV daily making their poor dates hilariously run for the door. Now K-von and Geoff are here for a special one-night comedy event. With collective appearances on SHOWTIME, Comedy Central, HBO, and many more, these two stand-ups will leave you with a night to remember.

Headlines September 10 – 12

Shawn was born January 19, 1971 in New York City. He and his siblings were raised in relative poverty. Shawn said about his notably humorous family in Jet: “Dinner itself was funny because we didn’t have nothing to eat. So we had to crack each other up for dinner in order to fill each other up.”

Luckily, the elder Wayans were soon to change all of that. Shawn made his acting debut in 1989 in the movie I’m Gonna Get You Sucka, a movie written and directed by brother Keenen. From there he joined the cast of In Living Color, a family effort–every single one of the famous Wayans clan acted in the popular television show at some point.

Marlon, born July 23, 1972, went to the Performing Arts High School in New York City, and then attended the Howard University Film School. He, too, started out his acting career in the movie I’m Gonna Get You Sucka, and then joined the cast of In Living Color in 1992, two years after Shawn. He was also seen in Mo’ Money with his brother Damon, and then, in 1994, in the movie Above the Rim with Tupac Shakur.

In 1995 Shawn and Marlon launched their own television show, The Wayans Brothers. Although they began with little power over the direction of the show, they eventually ended up not only acting in it, but also producing, writing, and directing it as well. The show, Marlon told the Onion.com, was about “two brothers who are trying to make it in this world, and it’s all about family. Me, I think family is key, and if you have love for family, then you have love for others–and you have unity as a people.” It was a television success and aired on the WB network for five years and was the first show off the popular network to be sold into syndication. Shawn and Marlon were beginning to make their own names and ways in the entertainment business, and they were on their way up.

The brothers reunited in 2000 for their summer hit, Scary Movie. This film, too, was a spoof, this time poking fun at the rash of popular teenage horror flicks like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. “I think we were watching I Know What You Did Last Summer” Marlon said in Jet, “and we said ‘I know what I’m gonna do next summer. I’m gonna make fun of all these…movies I’m so tired of seeing.” Scary Movie became Miramax’s highest-grossing movie of all time and reached number five on the list of top earners for the summer. The movie did so well that a sequel, Scary Movie II, was immediately planned.

Also in 2000 Marlon and Shawn were asked to host the MTV Video Awards. The president of MTV told PR Newswire, “It’s obvious the comedy gene exploded in the Wayans family and we’re thrilled to have Shawn and Marlon hosting this year’s show.” That same year, Marlon appeared in the movie version of the board game Dungeons & Dragons. With such multi-faceted talent under their control, Shawn and Marlon Wayans are certain to be around, spoofing and poking fun at everything they can, for many years to come.

Headlines September 30 – October 3

Jay Oakerson began honing his storytelling style of stand-up comedy after a series of dead-end jobs, like driving around strippers and escorts in his hometown of Philadelphia. This won him the comedy portion of the Salem Orb-E Future Faces Competition and gave him the chance to perform at New York City’s noted comedy club Carolines on Broadway.

Now an eleven year stand-up veteran, the 32-year-old New York City resident has made comedy his full-time job, flooring audiences with anecdotal bits about ultra-macho frat boys or being too fat for karate. Jay has performed at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal and is currently starring and writing consultant on the hit IFC show Z-Rock, where he received critical acclaim for his performance as “Neil”, the sexually questionable owner of a NYC rock club. Jay has also appeared on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and Dave Attell’s Insomniac Tour, and was a contributing writer for Chappelle’s Show.

Keep an eye out for Big Jay Oakerson’s half-hour special airing on Comedy Central and the release of Big Jay Oakerson: An American Storyteller available now on Comedy Central Records & iTunes. Big Jay is coming off a 7 week tour opening for KoRn and is currently on tour with Rockstar Mayhem Fest!

Both are apt titles, considering that Sugar Sammy is touring the globe like a rock star, setting attendance records around the world for sold-out shows in four languages – English, French, Punjabi and Hindi. International critics, from Canada to Dubai, are unanimous in their praise of his uproariously funny material, his laconic delivery and his universal insight on multicultural society.

A Canadian born to Indian parents, Sugar Sammy draws on everything from arranged marriages in his own Indian ancestry to his views on deviant sex, drugs and modern day relationships. Brilliantly entertaining and relatable, Sugar Sammy will have you laughing, thinking, and seeing life in a whole new way.

Sugar Sammy was featured in his own comedy special “Sugar Sammy Live in Concert” for HBO Canada in June 2009. His special on Showtime Arabia, “Sugar Sammy Live in Dubai” will air in Dubai and 14 countries throughout the Middle East in September 2009. His other television specials include the Showtime Arabia specials, “Minorities Rule” and “Friday Night Live”, CBC’s “Just For Laughs”, CTV’s “Comedy Now”, and appearances on The Comedy Network (Canada), The Comedy Channel (Australia), and on Dutch TV.

He’s won the Just For Laughs Comedy Award for “Discovery of the Festival”, and garnered many other honors, including nominations for this year’s M!M!M! Awards, as well as the Canadian Comedy Award for “Funniest Male Comic”.

Sammy continues to tour the globe and prove that laughter is indeed universal. He’s performed in the USA, UK, Australia, South Africa, India, Ireland, Holland, Dubai, Germany, Hong Kong, Thailand, The Philippines, and the Caribbean. He also toured across Canada promoting his CD, “Down with the Brown”, and was forced to ad shows in every city, due to overwhelming demand.

<span

You think you went to college with me or I look like your cousin’s friend, but that is not the case. At one time or another you stumbled across me on your moving picture box in such cerebral gems as MTV’s Singled Out and Noam Chomsky’s Shipmates.

I was also in House of 1000 Corpses, which you were afraid to see because horror films make you pee a little. I was also in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, which you are somewhat reluctant to give me credit for, because I was only in a couple of scenes and I was not a robot.

When I told you about, Guys Like Us, a series I did on UPN, you replied, “I don’t get cable,” ignorant of the fact that UPN was freely available in many of the contiguous United States until its black heart was sliced out and carelessly jammed inside the WB’s desiccated corpse to form the Franken-channel of “The CW”. “I was on KROQ in Los Angeles for THREE YEARS!” “Radio is a dead medium,” you scoffed. “Well, I’m not only an alumnus of the 2001 US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO, but I went back in 2005 as half of the musical comedy duo Hard ‘N Phirm!” “Why would I care about stand-up comedy amid a bunch of drunken, nouveau-riche mountain dwellers and their many unnecessary art galleries?” Again I tried to appeal to your sycophantic sensibilities. “Guess who’ll be appearing at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal this year??” Again, you rejected me. “French-Canadians talk too throaty.” “But HnP is about to tape its very own half-hour special for Comedy Central! Surely that must…” “Meh.” Your judgments against me are growing tiresome. Still, I’m nowhere near being done with you yet.

Rob Zombie is producing my solo comedy album, Blood Pudding, AND I did a CS-fucking-I for crapsake!! Truthfully, I don’t care if or how you know me, or what opinions of me have formed like wax bottles in your important head. Just enjoy me NOW. I am from Memphis and my father was a professional bowler. Thank you for giving this indulgent essay one hundred and four seconds of your life that you will never get back.

An AmericasComedy.Com Interview

No one ever accused comedian and writer Laurie Kilmartin of being being “Mommy Dearest,” but then again, she hasn’t received her “Mother of the Year” award yet either.

Seasoned comedian and writer, Kilmartin is back in LA for awhile (or, at least, until the lease on her apartment expires) after being voted off as one of the top 10 finalists of the Last Comic Standing, Season 7. Not to worry, however. Kilmartin, a noted and sought-after comedy writer, who moved to back to California from New York to write for the now canceled “Bonnie Hunt Show,” vows to continue to advance her 20+ years as a stand-up and writer.

Kilmartin, who launched her stand-up career in the San Francisco Bay Area and then moved to New York, is unstoppable. She continues to write and perform, in spite of the pressures of single parenthood. Her act has changed considerably over the last three years. An unplanned pregnancy, a dark sense of humor and an absent baby-daddy tend to color her stand-up material. Sometimes, she brings her son, William, on the road with her. At other times, she doesn’t. She’s convinced that, someday, William will have an even darker sense of humor and tell jokes about his mommy.

“He has been exposed to my negativity and seems to not give a damn. He seems okay. I’ll tell him they’re just jokes, Mommy is being a comedian at work. He’ll be okay.”

“When I travel alone, it’s nice to completely escape and just be by myself like I was in the ‘80s and ‘90s, where I was just this lazy douche bag on the road who just did what I wanted to do and then did a show at night. Although, when I do bring him on the road, it’s very tiring, but we have a good time and he gets to see different parts of the country. So one’s good and the other is good, too.”

Kilmartin has performed at the Montreal, Aspen and Edinburgh comedy festivals. She has done stand-up on “Comedy Central,” “Jimmy Kimmel” and “Showtime,” and appeared on “Best Week Ever,” “The Today Show,” “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” “The Rachel Maddow Show,” “Fox & Friends” and “Oprah.” Kilmartin was also a ‘Top Ten’ finalist in season 7 of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” As if that is not enough, Punchline Magazine called Kilmartin’s CD, “Five Minutes to Myself,” one of the “Top Ten Comedy CDs of 2009.”

As a writer, Kilmartin was on the staff of the “The Late Late Show,” “Tough Crowd” and “The Bonnie Hunt Show.” And, she co-authored Sherri Shepherd’s memoir, “Permission Slips.”

Recently, we had the good fortune to chat with Laurie.

I’m finding a niche of people who want to know more about the comic and listen to the non-performance riffing than just watch a comedy special.
“It’s so neat that there is a market for that now. It seemed that comedy was dead for a little while. And, then, all of a sudden the Internet caught up. Whatever it was doing for music, it caught up with stand-up in the past couple years really quickly. Live comedy is like a million times better than what you see on TV and YouTube, you know. It’s just like the electricity of being there, being in the room with somebody makes all the difference really.”

What made you go to New York?
“You know, I got to see new faces in Montreal in 1998. There, I met a woman who would become my agent for a little while. She said, ‘Why don’t you come to New York?’ I visited it and I loved it! I was only going to stay for a year and I ended up staying for ten years. It’s really a hard city to leave. I still am kind of sick inside that I am not there right now. The comedy scene was amazing there. It was like Noah’s ark, there’s like, not two of every race, but a hundred thousand of every race in a housing project. It’s just amazing. I love it!”

Have you ever thought about doing television, movies, that type of thing?
“I have a really hard time auditioning. I get very angry at auditions, because I don’t like being judged, which is probably the wrong attitude to have if you’re trying to have an acting career. Maybe I can try to mature and see if there’s anything open for me along those lines, but I feel more comfortable doing stand-up and writing. You just go out less vulnerable than you are when you are running around to auditions and memorizing copy that probably isn’t that funny. You know it’s not funny, but you’re supposed to be a comedian so that you’re supposed to make it funny. It’s hard. I have a hard time with that whole process.”

You found a niche in early 2000 in writing. You did some dynamite writing. Is that something you enjoy more than stand-up?
“Thanks. No, I don’t enjoy writing more than stand-up. I had a great time writing on ‘Tough Crowd,’ but I was writing for comics about a show starring stand-ups. It just was part of my world. Since then, writing jobs have been a little disappointing. I have not had as much fun on a job as I had on ‘Tough Crowd,’ but it’s a decent way to make a living and it’s hard to turn down that kind of money if you have the offer. But I do prefer stand-up.”

So, your son is 3-years old?
“Yes, my son is three. That whole pregnancy and having a baby, that really knocks you down. Not to say that the comic dads aren’t decimated by that experience, as well, but if you’re the one who’s having the baby, it’s just really frickin’ hard to bounce back immediately and get right back into stand-up, roadwork and stuff. So, that was a nice reason to take another writing job.

Your comedy is pretty dark when it comes to motherhood and your son. Do you have a plan to explain to him as he’s growing up that Mommy’s a comic and she didn’t mean it?
“Yeah. Someone brought that up on stage recently, saying, ‘The first time I saw this woman, she had twenty minutes of abortion jokes and she was pregnant at the time.’ Actually, I remember that time. When I was pregnant, I was openly debating, via jokes, whether I was going to have the baby and keep him and all that stuff. So I think that, since in utero, he has been exposed to my negativity and seems to not give a damn. He seems okay. I’ll tell him they’re just jokes, Mommy being a comedian at work. He’ll be okay.”

You just released a new CD called “5 Minutes To Myself.” Are you doing all new material now or are you just kind of gradually fine-tuning your set?
“I’m like, ‘Wow, if I don’t need this chunk anymore, I will be so happy.’ That’s my attitude toward stuff. Since ‘Last Comic Standing,’ I went to New York for 2.5 months and worked on a lot of new material that I was not allowed to perform, but it’s ready to go. I’m excited and feeling very creative and full of ideas. I will have a significant portion of new material at the Punchline that’s not on my CD.”

Do you sell your CDs when you are on the road?
“Yeah, I guess so. I have a bunch. I should get rid of them. I hate that, but I’ll bring some. Usually, what I try to do is hide. You will actually have to find me to get the CD. I can’t really sit there as people are leaving and make eye contact. I feel like, ‘My job was to make you laugh and now I’m done.’ But if you want a CD, you can go through a series of trap doors and hidden rooms and find me and I’ll sell one to you.”

Is “Last Comic Standing” as highly manipulated with the editing as we’ve been told?
“I’m not really sure. They do edit. My set that got me picked for the ‘Top Ten’ was me telling 2.5 jokes. Other people’s full sets were shown. That’s a way to manipulate because you’re seeing someone else doing 2.5 minutes and me doing a minute and a half and one of the jokes doesn’t have a punchline. Anytime they’re going to edit the stuff that a comedian does, that’s manipulation. What the comic’s intention was and what you’re showing are two different things. Part of comedy is the rhythm of the set and, if it just seems jumbled and half-broken, it doesn’t feel funny.

The other thing that’s really horrific is that people get angry with you if you’re still in the competition and they don’t like you. If you saw me in a club and you didn’t like me, you’d be like, ‘Whatever.’ But you wouldn’t hate me and go online and say that I suck. You just wouldn’t be that invested in it. The emotions that a comic’s success brings out in people are kind of scary. It’s like, ‘Well, could you just direct that anger toward BP or Goldman Sachs and not at a fucking comic who is telling a joke?’ I mean, what are we supposed to do, turn down an opportunity to be on prime-time television when we’re asked?”

Are you big on social media?
“I like Facebook. I like the immediate commentary and to find out if someone likes a joke. It’s very addicting. Yeah, I like Facebook a lot.”

Watch Kilmartin’s piercing insight and bald sarcasm at The Sacramento Punchline where she will regale you into joyful delirium, August 13th and 14th.

Headlines August 13 – 14

Sinbad is internationally known for his starring appearances in hit movies like “Jingle All the Way,” playing opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger; “Houseguest” co-starring the late Phil Hartman, and let’s not forget his film debut “Necessary Roughness”, where he did none of his own stunts! He has starred in the television sitcom “A Different World” as well as his own series, “The Sinbad Show”. Entertainment mogul Quincy Jones sought out Sinbad to host UPN’s first late night talk show, “Vibe”. He also recently appeared as a recurring guest star on the Showtime Original Series “Resurrection Blvd.” Sinbad has even written a self-help book entitled “Sinbad’s Guide to Life: (Because I Know Everything)”. Sinbad has drawn legions of fans from his HBO highly-rated comedy specials; “Brain Damaged” (1991), “Afros & Bellbottoms” (1993), “Son of a Preacher Man” (1996), and “Nuthin But The Funk” (1998). His annual HBO music concert series (Oh! You didn’t know he was musical?) “Sinbad’s 70’s Soul Music Festival” received the prestigious NAACP Image Award consecutively for two years as the “Most Outstanding Variety Series/Special”.

A one-time basketball standout for the University of Denver, Sinbad agrees that everything he needed to know for comedy, he learned from playing basketball. There are a number of things comedy and basketball have in common. One of the most important to Sinbad is “the competitive aspect that teaches you to never give up”. Now there is one part of Sinbad’s life that has been a well kept secret…he is a closet nerd. This comes in handy as a Master of Technology during private corporate engagements for clients such as: Intel Corporation, Breakaway Technologies, Apple and Microsoft as well as many others. As an intermediary to community focused technology solutions, Sinbad believes no one should be left behind in training and education. He has served as a spokesperson for the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) encouraging minorities to pursue studies in science, math and engineering. In honor of his parents Donald & Louise Adkins, Sinbad has established an academic scholarship in their name at the esteemed Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Showing his appreciation for our armed servicemen, the comedian/actorhas participated on USO tours and most recently performed at the USO of Hampton Roads 2006 Patriotic Festival.

<a
